B2+ Dave Troy – Social Mapping

This lesson plan focuses on the topic of community, culture and society. Students will watch a presentation about how communities in cities involve and use a broader range of vocabulary to describe their own neighbourhoods and cities. Students will gain listening practice and improve their speaking skills through discussion.

This fascinating TED Talk by technologist Dave Troy takes an alternative view of how our cities can be analysed and understood. By visualising and mapping cities along the lines of cultural interests rather than structural, geographic, racial or economic markers, Troy reveals how various communities and cultures develop and interact. This lesson plan will help your students describe and discuss culture and communities within society. Students will develop their vocabulary and improve their listening comprehension skills, as well as gaining valuable listening exam practice.
